The Nursing Summer Immersive Badge Program piloted an innovative model for engaging nursing students in specialty clinical experiences during the summer months—traditionally a gap period in the academic nursing calendar. This pilot program was developed in response to industry feedback identifying critical shortages in Oncology and Emergency Medicine nursing specialties.

The program enrolled 14 nursing students nearing program completion. Participants selected their immersive based on personal interest and workforce demand, ensuring a student-centered and industry-aligned experience. Each student completed:

• 20 hours of virtual didactic instruction
• 4 hours of hands-on skills lab
• 48 hours of in-person clinical rotations

The immersive was designed and led by experienced faculty and supported through partnerships with two magnet-designated healthcare systems. Upon completion, students received digital badges issued via Canvas, which recognized their specialty experience and could be included on resumes and professional portfolios.

This pilot confirmed that summer engagement opportunities can enhance nursing student confidence, accelerate clinical competency, and influence long-term career interests. Reflection essays indicated that students gained a clearer understanding of their professional direction, and 10 of the 14 participants expressed intent to pursue employment in their immersive specialty.

The successful implementation of this pilot suggests that a scalable, non-credit immersive experience can address workforce needs while providing students with valuable, real-world learning opportunities. The program is now positioned to serve as a model for future specialty nursing immersives across New Jersey’s Community Colleges.
