Executive Summary
The Nursing Summer Immersive Badge Program at Bergen Community College provided students with hands-on, real-world clinical experience in high-demand nursing specialties—Oncology and Emergency Medicine. This structured experiential learning opportunity was designed to deepen student understanding of specialty care environments and bridge the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice.
Students completed 72 hours of clinical experience, including:
- 20 hours of virtual mini-lectures
- 4 hours in a simulation skills lab
- 48 hours of in-person clinical rotations at two magnet-recognized health care institutions
Faculty with more than 30 years of expertise in their specialties provided mentorship, one-on-one feedback, and daily clinical debriefings. Students engaged in specialty-specific procedures such as chemotherapy administration, triage, central line care, and trauma response—experiences that mirror real-time clinical decision-making.
Student reflection essays underscored the profound impact of the immersive experience. Many cited improved confidence, stronger communication and teamwork skills, and a newfound or reaffirmed passion for specialty nursing. Importantly, 10 out of the 14 students reported a desire to pursue employment in the specialty area they experienced.
The immersive was not only an educational success, but a professional springboard—giving students practical exposure that supports a smoother transition into the healthcare workforce and builds a stronger pipeline of nurses prepared to meet critical industry needs.
