Executive Summary
As part of its commitment to workforce development in healthcare, Essex County College implemented a cost-free, non-credit Phlebotomy and EKG Certification Program in May 2024. This pilot initiative served 20 students enrolled in the General Science Associate Degree program, providing classroom instruction and covering all certification exam fees.
By integrating non-credit credential training with degree pathways, this program enhances student employability and addresses regional demand for skilled allied health professionals. Upon completion, participants are equipped with industry-recognized credentials and practical skills that directly support their entry into healthcare careers.
To further support upward mobility, the college established a non-credit to credit bridge in Medical Terminology. Students completing the non-credit Medical Terminology course now have the opportunity to earn 3 college credits by passing a departmental exam. This advancement creates a more flexible and accessible educational pathway for students seeking to transition from workforce training to academic achievement.
