Executive Summary
This pilot pathway connection launched an Integrated Education and Training (IET) model focused on preparing English as a Second Language (ESL) learners for careers in healthcare. The pilot aimed to demonstrate how adult literacy instruction can be effectively embedded within industry-specific training to accelerate workforce entry for linguistically diverse populations.
By blending English language development with contextualized instruction in healthcare, the pilot created an inclusive and supportive environment for ESL learners to begin building skills relevant to patient care occupations. The program also served as a model for integrating adult learning principles—such as culturally responsive teaching and self-directed learning—into career-focused education.
This pilot provides a foundation for future expansion of literacy-based workforce training programs and strengthens the broader pathway toward allied health careers.
