Executive Summary
This pathway connection piloted a non-credit Integrated Education and Training (IET) program designed specifically for English as a Second Language (ESL) students pursuing careers in healthcare. The program combined language development with foundational healthcare training, enabling participants to simultaneously build the literacy and technical skills needed for entry-level healthcare roles.
Participants engaged in coursework contextualized to the healthcare field, which helped them gain the language proficiency and industry knowledge required to move forward in the healthcare career pathway. By leveraging the existing cultural and linguistic assets of ESL learners, the program fostered both personal confidence and workforce readiness.
This pilot demonstrates the value of combining non-credit healthcare training with embedded adult literacy support to create effective on-ramps to in-demand careers for diverse learner populations.
