Executive Summary

In May 2024, Essex County College launched a pilot of its innovative Dual Certificate – Allied Health Careers program, offering students the opportunity to earn both phlebotomy and EKG certifications alongside their General Science Associate Degree. This pilot cohort of 20 students received classroom instruction and certification exam coverage at no cost, significantly enhancing access to industry-valued credentials.

The pilot exemplifies ECC’s strategy to integrate hands-on training and academic study, preparing students to meet the needs of New Jersey’s evolving healthcare workforce. Graduates of the program gain both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies that position them for entry-level healthcare roles in high-demand areas.

The college also piloted a non-credit to credit opportunity in Medical Terminology, where students completing the non-credit course can earn 3 credits via a faculty-proctored departmental exam. This approach bridges workforce training with academic progression and reinforces ECC’s dedication to flexible, student-centered education models.
