Executive Summary

As part of the Increasing Access to and Strengthening Healthcare Pathway project, Salem Community College strengthened student engagement and skill development by integrating hands-on experiential learning into the BIO 150 – Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology course. The revised curriculum introduced authentic patient care activities directly aligned with course content, allowing students to develop practical skills early in their academic journey.

Students engaged in activities such as recording vital signs using patient monitors, conducting ECGs with 6-lead personal EKG machines, and auscultating realistic cardiac, respiratory, and digestive sounds via manikins. These lab-based experiences were tied to real-world healthcare competencies and emphasized communication skills relevant to patient care.

Feedback from both students and faculty was overwhelmingly positive. Students reported greater interest, improved understanding of anatomical concepts, and stronger motivation to continue in the healthcare field. Faculty noted improved learning outcomes and increased classroom engagement.

This experiential learning enhancement is now a permanent part of the curriculum, ensuring future students benefit from a deeper connection between foundational science and applied healthcare practice.
