Executive Summary
Essex County College launched a credit-based Phlebotomy and EKG Certification Program in May 2024 as part of its broader strategy to embed industry credentials within academic degree pathways. This initiative was offered to a pilot cohort of 20 students in the General Science Associate Degree program, enabling them to earn certifications in phlebotomy and electrocardiography while progressing toward their degree.
Offered at no cost to students, the program included classroom instruction and full coverage of certification exam fees. Graduates emerge with both academic credentials and industry certifications, positioning them to enter the healthcare workforce with a competitive advantage.
Additionally, the college has established a non-credit to credit pathway in Medical Terminology. Students enrolled in the non-credit course may earn 3 college credits by successfully passing a departmental final exam. This credit-earning opportunity reinforces the college’s commitment to stackable, accessible credentials that support career advancement in health services.
