Executive Summary

To expand access to in-demand healthcare IT careers, Essex County College developed a non-credit Healthcare Information Management Professional certification course in collaboration with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Institute. This 18-week, online, instructor-led course was launched in June 2024 and is designed to prepare adult learners and faculty for two nationally recognized credentials: the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS®) and Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS®).

A key innovation of the course is the inclusion of an industry expert, supported by a HIMSS Foundation grant, who joined the faculty as an Adjunct Instructor. The course curriculum was developed with input from HIMSS and aligns directly with industry standards, ensuring participants are equipped with both the theoretical knowledge and practical insights needed for success in the field.

This training pathway addresses the growing demand for skilled healthcare IT professionals across New Jersey and provides learners with structured, stackable training that may lead to further academic or career advancement. Early interest has been strong, with the first cohort fully enrolled and supported by scholarships and mentoring. The course serves as a foundational element in the planned HIMSS Healthcare IT Technician Apprenticeship program under development.
