Executive Summary
Sussex County Community College has implemented a revised Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process that grants credit toward certificates and degrees based on demonstrated skills and industry credentials. This streamlined process has enabled more than 12 Optics Technology students to receive advanced standing and accelerate their educational journey.
SCCC is collaborating with industry partners such as Thorlabs, Esco Optics, Special Optics, and Inrad Optics to assess work-based learning experiences and credential attainment for college credit, especially in a sector where much proprietary information can make traditional assessments challenging.
