Executive Summary

Sussex County Community College (SCCC) has strengthened its Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process to support Machine Tool Technology students in converting industry-recognized credentials into college credit. This effort enhances access, reduces time to completion, and acknowledges real-world experience and training.

During Summer and Fall 2023, SCCC reviewed and refined its existing PLA framework to expand opportunities for credit equivalency, particularly for industry certifications in machining and CNC operations. While proprietary restrictions limit the availability of some documentation from employers, the improved process now allows for more flexible evaluation of relevant credentials and training outcomes.

By incorporating PLA as a core component of the pathway, SCCC ensures that learners—particularly adult and incumbent workers—can receive academic credit for demonstrated competencies, thereby accelerating their progress toward credential and degree attainment in the manufacturing sector.
