Precision Agriculture Using AI Drones

Executive Summary

The Precision Agriculture Using AI Drones pathway project is a leading-edge collaboration between Camden County College and Rowan University that integrates drone technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to advance agricultural innovation—specifically for blueberry farms across South Jersey. The project exemplifies the NJ Pathways to Career Opportunities initiative by aligning academic research and technological application to create scalable, workforce-relevant solutions.

At the core of the project was the design, development, and real-world testing of programmable drones equipped with AI-enabled imaging systems. These systems were used to detect crop diseases, predict blueberry yields, and optimize farm operations—significantly improving data collection and agricultural decision-making. Students participated in drone safety training, assembled drones, developed deep learning models, and conducted extensive fieldwork at five regional farms.

Students engaged in immersive, hands-on research experiences that enhanced their skills in programming, AI, and data science, while faculty benefited from professional development and interdisciplinary collaboration. Weekly meetings between students and faculty ensured consistent mentoring, progress updates, and peer learning. This experiential model empowered students with real-world problem-solving skills and career-relevant technical expertise.

The project’s impact extended beyond the field and classroom. Students presented their findings at multiple high-profile events including the NJ Agricultural Convention, Rowan University’s CSM Student Research Day, Camden County College’s Student Showcase, and the New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA) Symposium—where two student teams placed in the top four for research presentations.

By successfully merging technology, research, and workforce training, this project not only advanced student learning and institutional collaboration but also demonstrated a sustainable model for innovation in precision agriculture. It serves as a blueprint for future cross-sector partnerships that align education with evolving industry needs.
