Executive Summary
The Precision Agriculture Using AI Drones project provided a dynamic, immersive experiential learning opportunity for students from Camden County College and Rowan University. Rooted in real-world application, the initiative empowered students to directly apply classroom knowledge in high-tech agricultural environments.
Students engaged in every aspect of the project lifecycle—from assembling drones and programming AI models to conducting field tests on partner blueberry farms throughout South Jersey. These bi-weekly visits allowed students to collect and analyze data on crop yield and plant health, bridging theoretical understanding with hands-on application. The integration of AI for disease detection and crop prediction provided a cutting-edge context for student learning.
Through this approach, students gained skills in drone operations, data science, and agricultural technology, while also enhancing soft skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Weekly team meetings and mentorship from faculty fostered a supportive environment that emphasized continuous feedback and problem-solving.
This hands-on model not only deepened technical knowledge but also gave students a meaningful glimpse into the future of smart farming. Their contributions supported the development of scalable tools for more sustainable agriculture while building a strong foundation for careers in AI, engineering, and agricultural technology.
The project stands as a model of experiential learning, demonstrating how real-world challenges can become rich educational experiences that prepare students for today’s—and tomorrow’s—workforce.
