PATHWAY CONNECTION

The NJ Big Data Alliance – Data Science Articulation pathway connection is part of an ongoing, statewide effort to align Data Science curriculum across New Jersey’s Community Colleges and with four-year institutions to increase transferability and support student progression into high-demand careers in data analytics and computing.

Through an evolving collaboration model, the work began with curriculum-focused working groups and has since expanded through a formal NJBDA externship research project initiative. This initiative engages faculty and academic leadership in structured, cross-institutional research to assess curricular alignment and strengthen articulation practices. The goal is to support consistent course mapping, enhance inclusion in NJ Transfer, and increase transparency for students navigating transfer pathways.

This ongoing work continues to reduce course duplication and modernize academic offerings by aligning them with workforce needs and university expectations. It also creates a repeatable model for curriculum alignment that can be applied to other disciplines. The collaboration enables students to move efficiently through their academic journeys, saving time and money while preparing for careers in a data-driven economy.

A major milestone within this pathway connection is the launch of Essex County College’s new Associate of Science degree in Computer Science with a Data Science Option, which began in Fall 2024. The program includes four new courses—Data Science I, Data Science II, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, and Data Visualization—and was intentionally designed to support student accessibility while building foundational knowledge in mathematics and programming. Articulation agreements have been secured with New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Kean University, Drew University, and Caldwell University to support seamless transfer and long-term academic success.
